Neurodegeneration module under development
We are pleased to announce the development of a new neurodegeneration module, which will form part of the Targeted Proteins database (TPdb). Proteins in this module will be assessed for their potential as targets for treating conditions including Alzheimer’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease, Motor neuron disorders and Huntington’s Disease.
Professor D. Allan Butterfield of the University of Kentucky heads the Virtual Academy, which will oversee the running and development of the Neurodegenerative Disorders module. To date, he has in excess of 430 publications to his name, with work focusing on neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer’s, which places him at the forefront of such research. Other notable names within this faculty include Professor Trevor Robbins at the University of Cambridge and Dr. Keiji Tanaka at the Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Medical Science.
Discoveries within the field of neurodegeneration continue to be made at a fast pace, providing opportunities for the development of therapies. An ageing population and a lack of FDA approved drugs for the above-mentioned diseases, suggests that this area of research is one that could yield a number of new therapeutics over the next few years.
