Virtual Academies
How do Experts add value to the TPdb?
Adding value to basic protein research information is an editorially intensive process. Working in collaboration with the in-house editorial teams, a large network of external collaborators and reviewers has been established to create international “Virtual Academies”.
These Virtual Academies bring together many of the most highly respected figures in that particular field of protein research and proteomics, with those at the forefront of investigational drug research and have been set up for each TPdb Module, which cover specific groups of proteins (or disease areas).
For each TPdb Module, Virtual Academy members:
Advise on which proteins warrant the addition of a structured review to their Target Assessment
Recommend authors for these reviews
Act as referees, and/or recommend referees for the peer review process
Identify the most important 'unanswered questions' in their fields
Established TPdb Modules and Virtual Academies
The following TPdb Modules, with their corresponding Virtual Academies, have been established:
The Ubiquitin Proteasome System (UPS) Module
UPS Virtual Academy headed by Prof. John Mayer
The Lipid Signaling (LS) Module
LS Virtual Academy headed by Prof. Matthias Wymann
The Epidermal Growth Factor Receptors (EGFR) Module
EGFR Virtual Academy headed by Prof. Nancy Hynes
The Epigenetic Regulators (ER) Module
ER Virtual Academy headed by Prof. Stephen Baylin
The Kinome Module
Kinome Virtual Academy headed by Prof. Tony Hunter
Furture TPdb Modules and Virtual Academies
Virtual Academies are currently being established to provide expertise on the following set of protein systems or disease areas:
The Neurodegenerative Disorders (ND) Module
ND Virtual Academy will be headed by Prof. D. Allan Butterfield
Other modules are under development and their Virtual Academies are being set up. They will include disease-based modules covering cancer and metabolic diseases, in addition to other protein-based modules, including modules providing further depth of coverage of GPCRs.
